Pornography includes videos, images or written content involving graphic sexual activity and is usually used to sexually arouse the person viewing it. It is widely available online but can include photos, films, magazines and comics.

Using porn

People use pornography either to aid masturbation or to stimulate and arouse prior to sexual activity with a partner. Whilst pornography can be used as part of a healthy relationship with consenting adults, it very often has a negative impact on relationships.

Porn addiction

Some people can become addicted to pornography, in the same way that they can be addicted to substances like alcohol and drugs, or any number of behaviours such as food, work, or video games. An addiction is the compulsive need to engage in an activity to obtain a particular feeling or sensation.

Porn affects relationships

People who rely on pornography for sexual arousal often develop an unrealistic view of sexual relationships, one that objectifies their partner and leads to a breakdown in communication and intimacy. Online pornography can be extreme and violent in nature, with consent violations and coercion that is unhealthy. People who watch porn can therefore develop a warped sense of what is expected of them in a sexual relationship.

Porn and mental health

Porn addiction can lead to isolation, depression, anxiety and poor work performance, and is linked with substance abuse. Also, because porn actors are often chosen for their physical attributes, many young people develop a sense of body shame or inadequacy from watching it.
