This form should only be used by patients who have previously been prescribed the Progestogen-Only Pill (POP) – also known as the ‘mini-pill’ – by SHiP and who require a further supply.

SHiP prescribes the generic Progestogen-only pill containing DESOGESTREL 75mcg.

All other users please contact the health care provider who previously prescribed the POP for you or contact SHiP on 01752 431124 to request a consultation with our contraception team.

The Progestogen-Only Pill (POP) contains a hormone similar to the progesterone hormone produced naturally by the ovaries. This type of pill has to be taken every day at the same time and with no breaks.

The POP works in two ways that contribute to its contraceptive effect. It thickens the cervical mucus at the neck of the womb preventing sperm entering the womb and it can also stop the release of an egg (ovulation) in many women. It is effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly (99% when taken perfectly and 91% with typical use).

Your periods may change when taking the POP; they may stop altogether, become irregular, you may experience spotting or they may last longer.

The POP does not protect you from STIs and you may wish to use a condom as well. We recommend using a condom with new partners until you have both been tested for STIs.
