Patients are able to access their preferred choice of contraception if this is a suitable method for them following an assessment, which is currently performed by telephone due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Where you live and your age may impact which service will provide these options for you.

Many patients are able to access contraception from their own GP.

Contraception is free to all people in the UK. With more than a dozen methods to choose from, we can help you find one that suits you best.

Remember that barrier methods such as condoms are the only form of contraception that protect against STIs as well as pregnancy. Both you and your partner should be tested for STIs before you have sex without a condom.

See Routine Contraception for specific pages to guide you through the different contraceptive methods that are available at SHiP.

We also offer emergency contraception and abortion services.

Most routine contraception, including emergency contraception, is provided by GPs. Some enhanced GP services also fit LARC such as IUS/IUD (coils) and implants. As a service we can provide both copper coils and the hormonal IUS for contraception purposes. Unfortunately, we are not commissioned to provide the hormonal IUS for either HRT or management of heavy menstrual bleeding. Unfortunately, if you require it for these reasons you need to return to your GP to discuss your options for fitting elsewhere. If you are unsure of your scenario, you can contact us for a telephone consultation to discuss your options, however there may be a wait for this.

Free emergency contraception is available to women aged 13-24 years from enhanced pharmacy providers across the city.
